DEI has Derek Ramstrom 'on their radar'
DEI is watching 16-year-old PASS North Series driver Derek Ramstrom.
Ramstrom's father, Rick Ramstrom, confirmed Tuesday that he and his son met with DEI development director Mike Greci for half an hour on Saturday morning at Thompson International Speedway. Greci was at Thompson to watch 3 DEI cars compete in the NASCAR Camping World East Series Pepsi 100, a race won by DEI driver Trevor Bayne.
According to Rick Ramstrom, Greci said that Derek Ramstrom is "on their radar."
Derek Ramstrom has won 3 straight Super Late Model features at Thompson. The West Boylston, Mass., driver is also 11th in the PASS North Standings with 1 top-5 and 3 top-10s in 6 races this year.
On Saturday night, in the PASS North part of the doubleheader, Ramstrom had the fastest car on the race track throughout the 75-lap event but was run into the turn 4 wall by leader Rick Martin on a restart with 2 laps remaining.
Ramstrom has had offers to sign with a scouting agent already this year, something the family has decided against on the advice of current DEI Sprint Cup Series crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion, also a Massachusetts native. Manion fields the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolets driven by Martin Truex Jr.
"When I talked to Bono, he was the one who told me not to sign with anybody," Rick Ramstrom said. "He said if you sign with a scouting agency and then a Cup team in interested in you, they're not going to want to have to buy somebody out in order to have (Derek)."
Ramstrom is appealing to DEI because of his age. Greci told Ramstrom that DEI only looks at 16-year-olds, and that the organization doesn't require a multi-million dollar bankroll to purchase a seat on one of the developmental rides.
DEI has acquired video of Ramstrom's races at Thompson this year to review his performances.
"I asked (Greci), 'What do we need to do?'" Rick Ramstrom said. "They just said not to do anything different. They told Derek just to go out, have fun and do the best he could."
Ramstrom said that DEI promised to be in touch with the family, but that they set no timetable for when that might happen.
Greci is a New England native who fielded Camping World East Series and Nationwide Series cars for New York driver Mike McLaughlin in the early 1990s. Current Joe Gibbs Racing crew chief Greg Zipadelli was part of that team.
